Gallery - Space

Despite having always been interested in spirituality, I am fascinated by science and the conviction that the two must either reconcile, or one give way, if mankind is to progress.

I was greatly inspired by the images produced by the Hubble Telescope of regions of space so distant and vast that we can barely comprehend them. So distant that the light that reaches us was created in the distant past. When we look to the skies we are looking back in time.  The images reveal beautiful structures of gas and dust bigger than the Milky Way yet which appear intricate, even fragile. As they give birth to stars, these nebulae are the very foundation of life.

The works represent my awe at the scale and beauty of our universe. They ask the viewer to try and imagine those places. In doing so we may, for a second, be able to feel our tiny place in the universe. Definitely miniscule but utterly integral. Recognising our insignificance is a first step towards feeling a part of the whole.

The paintings, right in front of us but portraying places and times immensely distant seek to place the viewer in a relationship with these places that mankind is unlikely ever to visit..
